Cosmotronic was founded in the late 1960s as a provider of circuit boards to the military and defense marketplace. Some of the first products produced by Cosmotronic consisted of simple wire wrapped boards, followed by two sided circuits, multilayer products and in the early 1980s transitioning into flexible circuits. In the late 1980s Cosmotronic produced their first rigid-flex circuits, as well as some aluminum core boards. Development of manufacturing processes and technologies in the military and aerospace marketplace has continued unabated since Cosmotronic’s inception.
Cosmotronic’s first facility was located in Santa Ana, Ca. before moving in 1975 to a custom built 15,000 sq/ft. facility located in Irvine, Ca. The original Irvine facility contains all of Cosmotronic’s wet processing capabilities, as well as waste treatment processing, photo-imaging, Engineering and some administrative support. In 1990, Cosmotronic added another 15,000 sq/ft of capacity adjacent to its Irvine facility. The newer building now supports many of the dry processes along with final inspection and the shipping/receiving activities. In total, Cosmotronic has 30,000 sq/ft of processing capabilities that is staffed by nearly 100 employees on three shifts.
Cosmotronic was originally a family owned business started by its founder Said Cohen. Mr. Cohen made the difficult decision to sell Cosmotronic to Thayer Capital in 2001. Thayer subsequently sold the operation to its current owner, JR Controls, Inc. in 2006. Cosmotronic is now part of a three plant organization that specializes in providing a variety of printed circuit board solutions to a broad customer base. Cosmotronic continues to provide high reliability circuits to the defense/aerospace marketplace, while its sister companies Winonics Inc. in Brea, Ca., is a provider of commercial multilayer rigid boards and Bench 2 Bench Technologies in Fullerton, Ca., provides high density flexible circuit interconnects to it’s growing customer base.
